“Clean eating” is a phrase that emerged from the hippie movement in the 1960s, driven by a need to only eat clean foods and to avoid fast and processed foods.
In addition to a return to nature, the hippies also advocated a return to healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Then “clean eating” boomed and the more people started to pay attention to their diet, the more they adopted it. For many of them, the concept of clean eating means changing the way we think about, prepare and consume food.
Since this diet avoids junk food, it makes sense that it would reduce calories, fat, and sodium, thus bringing benefits to humans. At the same time vitamins and nutrients are supplied.
Unlike dieting, which assumes that if you want to lose weight, you’ll follow it faithfully over a period of time, clean eating is essentially a lifestyle change. And weight loss can of course result, but that’s essentially a “side effect” and not the reason for choosing a “clean” lifestyle.
In fact, a good knowledge of the foods you put into your body is the key to eating clean. The notion of being extra careful about what we eat and the health benefits it has is often overlooked in a typical diet that prioritizes weight loss regardless of food quality and nutrients.
One of the reasons clean eating has caught on is that there are virtually no rules. Just follow the general guidelines and everyone can consume what suits their taste best.
In other words, if someone isn’t a broccoli fan, nobody is forcing them to eat it. Maybe he’ll eat carrots instead. If he doesn’t like apples, he can eat pears etc.
Of course, clean eating fanatics also avoid lightly processed foods such as supermarket meat or packaged salads. But more moderate dieters choose less-processed foods as an alternative to make dieting easier while making consistent lifestyle changes.
Weight loss is one of the most obvious benefits of clean eating, but it’s not the only one. There’s more, because eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables reduces your risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s, among other things.
Of course, in this prepackaged life of fast food and processed foods of all kinds, sticking to a clean diet is far from easy. However, for this reason, the benefits are impressive and definitely worth the effort.
